the challenge
Within an extremely limited timebox of 45 days, Apprentice had to build an entirely new platform to help get the Covid-19 vaccine out as quickly as possible. The task was complicated by the fact that Apprentice’s platform spanned many different tech stacks.
Such an overhaul would have been impossible for their existing staff. Plus, software for pharma manufacturing is some of the most highly-regulated in that world—which means constant compliance audits.

the a.team solution
With no time to go through the lengthy traditional hiring process, Apprentice turned to A.Team. “To hire that ourselves organically in that timeline was going to be impossible. The engineers A.Team brought in were able to get onboarded fast and up to speed to move forward with us. There’s no way we would have been able to build what we’ve built without having a partner like A.Team,” said Angelo Stracquatanio, CEO and Co-Founder of Apprentice.
Rapid team deployment
With a deadline looming less than two months away, Apprentice needed engineering talent fast. “I called A.Team and within two weeks we had twenty engineers that to this day are still with us.”
Highly flexible & rapid scaling
After the initial sprint, Stracquatanio realized he needed even more support. “We continued to scale our A.Team resources—now we have 50 A.Teamers across everything
Integrating with the core team
Key to any team’s success is the ability to integrate and align fully on objectives. “A.Team engineers blended in with our core tech team—at this point it’s hard to tell them apart.
building the team
Key to Apprentice’s success has been how well they integrated A.Teamers into their larger team. “We treat them as full-time employees,” Stracquatanio said. "They join all of our standups. They have effectively become our team—there's no difference. They come to our holiday parties.” Ultimately 50 engineers from A.Team integrated with Apprentice’s core tech team, working from within their organization to ramp up efficiency.
building the product
With A.Team's help, Apprentice was able to rapidly deploy a team of highly skilled engineers who were quickly integrated into their core tech team. “The talent level was extreme,” Stracquatanio said.
The combined skill sets—IoT, intelligent batch execution, augmented procedures, and immersive training—allowed Apprentice to build a new version of their platform and scale to meet the unprecedented demand. As the immediate crisis abated, Apprentice continued to expand its A.Team, plugging in expert build teams across the company.
results
Apprentice launched an entirely new version of its product just in time, powering the distribution of nearly 400M doses of the COVID vaccine across the world. Since then the scope of the mission expanded and now A.Teams are fully integrated across the company. Apprentice became one of the healthcare industry’s most promising startups, and raised a $100 million Series C led by Insight Partners.
